Huangshi Travel Guide

A historic industrial city on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Huangshi is known for its ancient copper mining heritage, steel industry, and scenic Cihu Lake.

About

Huangshi, located on the south bank of the Yangtze River in eastern Hubei Province, is one of China's oldest industrial cities. Its history of metallurgy spans over three millennia — the Tonglüshan Ancient Copper Mine site dates back to the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC) and represents one of the world's earliest known mining operations.

In the modern era, Huangshi emerged as a powerhouse of China's steel industry. The Daye Iron Mine, established in the late 19th century, was one of China's first modern mining operations. After 1949, the city became a cornerstone of the nation's industrial development, with massive state investment in steel, cement, and machinery manufacturing.

The city's name — "Yellow Stone" — comes from the yellowish-brown cliffs along the Yangtze. Today, Huangshi is undergoing a transition from heavy industry to a more diversified economy, while preserving its rich industrial heritage as tourist attractions. The beautiful Cihu Lake, with its clear waters and surrounding hills, adds a natural counterpoint to the city's industrial character.

History & Development

The Huangshi area has been mined for copper since the Western Zhou period, over 3,000 years ago. The Tonglüshan site provides evidence of remarkably sophisticated mining techniques, including timber-supported shafts, drainage systems, and ventilation methods that were centuries ahead of their time.

During the late Qing Dynasty, the Daye Iron Mine was developed as part of the Westernization Movement (1860s-1890s), marking the beginning of modern industry in the region. After the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, Huangshi was designated as a key industrial base, receiving substantial state investment.

The city has faced the typical challenges of China's industrial restructuring since the 1990s, with many state-owned enterprises undergoing reform. In recent years, Huangshi has been developing the "Huangshi National Mining Park" and other tourism projects to preserve and showcase its industrial heritage.

Economy & Industries

Huangshi's economy has been historically dominated by heavy industry — steel, metallurgy, cement, and machinery manufacturing. The city is home to Daye Special Steel, one of China's major specialty steel producers, and Huaxin Cement, one of the country's largest cement manufacturers.

In recent years, the city has been actively diversifying its economy. The high-tech sector, including electronic information and new materials, has been growing. The tourism industry is developing around the city's unique industrial heritage sites, ancient copper mine, and natural attractions.

Huangshi's gross domestic product reached approximately 210 billion yuan in 2024. The service sector's share of the economy has been increasing as the city transitions from its traditional industrial base toward a more balanced economic structure.
