The Huangshi area has been mined for copper since the Western Zhou period, over 3,000 years ago. The Tonglüshan site provides evidence of remarkably sophisticated mining techniques, including timber-supported shafts, drainage systems, and ventilation methods that were centuries ahead of their time.
During the late Qing Dynasty, the Daye Iron Mine was developed as part of the Westernization Movement (1860s-1890s), marking the beginning of modern industry in the region. After the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, Huangshi was designated as a key industrial base, receiving substantial state investment.
The city has faced the typical challenges of China's industrial restructuring since the 1990s, with many state-owned enterprises undergoing reform. In recent years, Huangshi has been developing the "Huangshi National Mining Park" and other tourism projects to preserve and showcase its industrial heritage.
