City hero image

Yueyang

Home of the legendary Yueyang Tower and the vast Dongting Lake, this Hunan city blends ancient poetry, petrochemical industry, and Yangtze River port logistics.

About

Yueyang sits at the northeastern corner of Hunan Province, where the Yangtze River meets Dongting Lake. This strategic water junction has made Yueyang a center of transportation, commerce, and military significance for over two thousand years. The city is defined by its lake: Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China, creates a vast wetland ecosystem that is home to migratory birds, abundant fish, and some of the most celebrated scenery in Chinese poetry.

The soul of Yueyang is the Yueyang Tower, a three-story wooden pavilion on the city lakefront that has inspired poets and scholars for over a millennium. Fan Zhongyan essay On Yueyang Tower, written in 1044, is one of the most memorized texts in the Chinese language, and its famous line Worry before the world worries; rejoice after the world rejoices captures the civic spirit that the city embodies to this day.

History & Development

Yueyang has over 2,500 years of recorded history. During the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), it was part of the Chu state. The city strategic location at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake made it a crucial naval base during the Three Kingdoms period, when Eastern Wu general Lu Su trained his navy here.

The most defining cultural moment in Yueyang history came in 1044, when the Song dynasty official Fan Zhongyan wrote On Yueyang Tower at the request of Teng Zijing, a friend who had rebuilt the tower. The essay elevated Yueyang from a provincial lakeside town into one of the most famous places in Chinese literary consciousness. The Miluo River, which flows through Yueyang into Dongting Lake, is the site where the poet Qu Yuan drowned himself in 278 BC, an act commemorated annually across China and the Chinese diaspora as the Dragon Boat Festival.

Economy & Industries

Yueyang economy is anchored by petrochemical manufacturing, port logistics, and aquatic products processing. The central industrial force is Sinopec Baling Petrochemical Company, one of China major refineries and chemical plants. Located in the Yunxi District, Baling Petrochemical processes over 15 million tons of crude oil annually and produces a wide range of products including synthetic rubber, caprolactam, and chemical fibers. It is the largest industrial enterprise in Hunan Province and the primary economic engine of Yueyang.

Port logistics is the second pillar. Yueyang Port is one of the eight major ports on the Yangtze River and the only national-level port in Hunan. It handles over 100 million tons of cargo annually, including containers, coal, ore, grain, and chemicals. The Chenglingji Port area connects Hunan to the Yangtze River Economic Belt, making Yueyang a critical logistics hub for central China.

Grain and oil processing, aquatic products from Dongting Lake, and tourism complete the economic picture. The Dongting Lake fishery produces high-quality fish, crabs, and shrimp. Yueyang GDP reached ¥490 billion in 2024, with petrochemicals accounting for approximately 40 percent of industrial output.
