Xinyu Travel Guide

A modern steel city transformed into an eco-tourism destination, Xinyu is known for Fairy Lake and its connection to the classic Chinese myth "The Fairy Matching."

About

Xinyu is a prefecture-level city in central Jiangxi Province, with a population of 1.2 million. For decades, Xinyu was defined by its steel industry — Xinyu Steel (Xinyu Gangtie) is one of China's major steel producers and the city's economic backbone.

Founded in 1958, Xinyu Steel grew into a sprawling industrial complex employing tens of thousands of workers. It produced steel for China's railways, bridges, and buildings during the nation's rapid urbanization. The steel industry brought prosperity but also environmental challenges.

In the 2000s, Xinyu began a remarkable transformation. The city invested heavily in environmental remediation, cleaning up industrial pollution and developing the tourism potential of Fairy Lake. A 50-square-kilometer reservoir surrounded by forested hills and dotted with over 100 islands, Fairy Lake had long been a local treasure. With improved infrastructure and promotion, it became a national-level scenic area.

Today, Xinyu offers a unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty. Visitors can tour the steel museum to understand the city's industrial story, then relax on a Fairy Lake cruise surrounded by pristine nature. The city's transformation from "Steel City" to "Eco-City" is one of the more successful examples of industrial restructuring in inland China.
