Qitaihe Travel Guide

Qitaihe is one of Heilongjiang's smallest prefecture-level cities, both in area and population. Despite its small size, the city has made a name for itself in two very different arenas: coal mining and winter sports.

The city sits on high-quality coal deposits, particularly coking coal used in steel production. Mining has been the economic backbone since the city's founding in the mid-20th century.

Surprisingly, this small coal city has become a powerhouse in Chinese winter sports. Qitaihe has produced multiple Olympic champions in short track speed skating, earning it the nickname "City of Champions." The national training base here has nurtured some of China's best winter athletes.

Qitaihe is compact and easy to navigate. While it lacks the grand attractions of larger cities, it offers an authentic glimpse into a working-class Northeast city and the unique culture that has produced world-class athletes from humble beginnings.
