Pingxiang Travel Guide

A historic coal mining city in western Jiangxi, Pingxiang is known for the Wugong Mountain scenic area and its revolutionary heritage from the 1922 Anyuan miners' strike.

About

Pingxiang is a prefecture-level city in western Jiangxi Province, bordering Hunan, with a population of 1.8 million. For much of the 20th century, Pingxiang was known as one of China's most important coal mining centers — the Anyuan Coal Mine was a cornerstone of China's early industrialization.

The Anyuan miners' strike of 1922, led by Liu Shaoqi and Li Lisan, was a seminal event in Chinese labor history and put Pingxiang on the national stage. The Anyuan Revolutionary Memorial preserves the history of this movement.

In recent decades, Pingxiang has been transforming its economy, reducing dependence on coal while developing tourism, manufacturing, and new energy industries. The city's greatest natural asset is Wugong Mountain, a spectacular range with vast alpine meadows above 1,600 meters — a landscape more reminiscent of Switzerland than southern China. The mountain has become one of Jiangxi's top hiking and camping destinations, attracting outdoor enthusiasts from across the country.

The city also boasts impressive limestone caves, ancient Buddhist temples, and a distinctive cuisine influenced by both Jiangxi and Hunan culinary traditions — characterized by bold flavors, generous use of chili, and preservation techniques like pickling and curing.
