Chenzhou Travel Guide

A misty mountain city in southern Hunan where Dongjiang Lake's ethereal fog and the dramatic Danxia landscape of Gaoyi Ridge create one of China's most photogenic regions.

About

Chenzhou, meaning "Chen Prefecture," is a city of striking natural beauty in the southern part of Hunan Province, bordering Guangdong to the south. Known as the "South Gate of Hunan," it sits at the intersection of the Nanling Mountains and the Luoxiao Mountains, a landscape of misty rivers, red sandstone ridges, and dense subtropical forests. Dongjiang Lake is Chenzhou's crown jewel — a vast reservoir where the dramatic temperature difference between chilled lake water and warm moist air creates an otherworldly fog that blankets the river every morning. The sight of fishermen in bamboo hats casting nets against this ethereal backdrop has become one of China's most photographed scenes.

To the west, Gaoyi Ridge showcases the region's Danxia landform — red sandstone sculpted by centuries of erosion into dramatic ridges and rock formations. Further south, Mang Mountain National Forest Park offers a glimpse of pristine subtropical wilderness with its mist-shrouded peaks, ancient trees, and abundant wildlife.

Chenzhou's cuisine reflects the bold flavors of Hunan cooking — spicy, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. The local fish noodle soup, Linwu duck, and fresh Dongjiang rainbow trout are signature dishes that draw food lovers from across the region.

History & Development

Chenzhou has over 2,000 years of recorded history. Established as a prefecture during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), it was originally named Guiyang Commandery. The area served as a strategic gateway between central China and the Lingnan region (modern Guangdong and Guangxi).

During the Tang and Song dynasties, Chenzhou became a refuge for exiled officials and poets, who found solace in its misty mountains and wrote poems praising its beauty. The famous Song Dynasty poet Qin Guan wrote his renowned "Song of Chenzhou" here.

In the 20th century, Chenzhou played a role in the revolutionary period. The city was a base area for historical forces during the 1930s, and several historical sites remain.

Modern Chenzhou has developed into an important transportation hub connecting Hunan with Guangdong. The completion of high-speed rail links has made it a popular weekend getaway for travelers from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, drawn by its natural beauty and hot springs.

Economy & Industries

Chenzhou's economy is diversified across mining, tourism, and agriculture. The region is rich in mineral resources, particularly tungsten, tin, bismuth, and fluorite. Chenzhou is known as "China's Fluorite Capital" and "Nonferrous Metals Home."

Tourism has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by Dongjiang Lake, Gaoyi Ridge, and Mang Mountain. The city received over 80 million domestic tourists in recent years, with tourism revenue becoming a significant contributor to the local economy.

Agriculture thrives in the mountain valleys. Chenzhou produces high-quality tea, citrus fruits, and tobacco. The cold-water fish farming in Dongjiang Lake, especially rainbow trout, has become a lucrative industry.

The city has also developed several industrial parks specializing in electronic components, building materials, and food processing.
