Bazhong city skyline and landmarks (巴中) - Travel China Guide

Bazhong Travel Guide

A green mountain city in northeastern Sichuan, rich in historical heritage and home to the spectacular Enyang Guan fortress.

About

Bazhong, located in the northeastern corner of Sichuan Province, is a city defined by its mountains and rivers. Nestled in the Daba Mountain range, the city offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery in northern Sichuan. Guangwu Mountain National Park is the region's premier attraction. Covering over 600 square kilometres, it is famous for its autumn foliage — the mountainsides explode in shades of red, orange, and yellow from October to November, drawing photographers and nature lovers from across China. Enyang Ancient Town, a 30-minute drive from downtown Bazhong, is a beautifully preserved riverside settlement dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Stone-paved streets, traditional courtyard houses, and ancient theatres transport visitors back in time. Bazhong also holds an important place in local history. During the 1930s, the area was a key strategic location, and numerous historical sites and museums commemorate this heritage.

History & Development

Bazhong's history dates back over 2,000 years. During the Qin and Han dynasties, it was part of the strategic Ba-Shu region controlling access to the Sichuan Basin. The area became a major strategic location during the 1930s. Historical forces established the Sichuan-Shaanxi Base here, and many significant battles were fought in the surrounding mountains. Over 120,000 people from the Bazhong area contributed to the military effort.

In the post-1949 era, Bazhong remained relatively isolated due to its mountain location. Economic development accelerated in the 2000s with improved transportation infrastructure connecting the city to the rest of Sichuan.

Economy & Industries

Bazhong's economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and light manufacturing. The mountainous terrain supports forestry products, tea plantations, and medicinal herb cultivation. Tourism is the fastest-growing sector, driven by Guangwu Mountain (especially the autumn red leaves season), Enyang Ancient Town, and historical heritage sites. The city has developed food processing industries, particularly for local specialties such as preserved meats, mushrooms, and tea. Improved highways have connected Bazhong to the broader Sichuan economic zone.
