Zaozhuang city skyline and landmarks (枣庄) - Travel China Guide

Zaozhuang Travel Guide

Home of the reconstructed Taierzhuang Ancient Town, the vast Weishan Lake wetlands, and Shandong's spiciest chicken dish.

About

Zaozhuang, located in the southernmost part of Shandong Province, is a city defined by its dramatic contrasts — ancient canal towns and modern industry, vast wetlands and rocky mountains, gentle lake scenery and famously spicy cuisine.

The city's crown jewel is Taierzhuang Ancient Town, a meticulously restored Grand Canal settlement that draws visitors with its Ming-Qing architecture, lantern-lit canals, and deep WWII history. The 1938 Battle of Taierzhuang, a pivotal Chinese victory, is commemorated in the town's museums and memorial halls.

Zaozhuang's natural landscapes are equally impressive. Weishan Lake, Shandong's largest lake, supports a vast wetland ecosystem, while Baodugu Mountain and Xiong'er Mountain offer adventurous hiking and stunning views. The Guinness-record-breaking pomegranate garden showcases the region's agricultural heritage.

Historically, the area was home to Mozi, one of ancient China's most influential philosophers. The city's Tengzhou area preserves his legacy through a dedicated memorial hall.

Zaozhuang's cuisine is notably bold for Shandong, with the fiery Zaozhuang Spicy Chicken leading the charge — a dish that has earned the city a reputation as the spice capital of the province.
