Rizhao Travel Guide

A coastal city in southern Shandong renowned for its golden beaches, fresh seafood, and as the birthplace of the "Sunshine Coast" tourism brand.

About

Rizhao is a coastal prefecture-level city in southeastern Shandong Province, situated on the Yellow Sea coast. It is one of China youngest cities, having been established as a prefecture-level city in 1989, but has rapidly developed into one of Shandong top tourist destinations.

The city name means "sunshine", a fitting name for a place that enjoys over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually. Rizhao boasts some of the best beaches in northern China, with fine golden sand and clean waters stretching along a 168-kilometer coastline. Unlike many Chinese beach cities, most of Rizhao beaches are free and open to the public.

Beyond its beaches, Rizhao is known for being one of China northernmost tea-growing regions. Rizhao green tea, grown in the coastal climate, has a distinctive flavor that has earned it national recognition. The city is also a major seafood producer, supplying fresh catches to markets across Shandong. The "Sunshine Coast" tourism brand, which emphasizes eco-friendly and accessible coastal tourism, was pioneered in Rizhao.

History & Development

Before the 1980s, Rizhao was a small fishing and agricultural county under the administration of Linyi. The area had a long history of fishing, salt production, and farming, but remained relatively undeveloped.

The turning point came in 1985 when Rizhao was designated as a county-level city. In 1989, it was upgraded to a prefecture-level city, gaining administrative independence. This coincided with China coastal development boom, and Rizhao quickly capitalized on its natural advantages.

The city invested heavily in developing its coastline for tourism. Wanpingkou Beach was transformed from a simple fishing beach into a modern seaside resort. The "Sunshine Coast" brand was created to market Rizhao as a premium beach destination. Steel and port industries also developed, providing employment and economic growth. In just three decades, Rizhao transformed from an obscure fishing area into one of Shandong most visited tourist cities.

Economy & Industries

Tourism is the leading industry in Rizhao. The city attracts millions of visitors annually, drawn by its free beaches, coastal scenery, and fresh seafood. The tourism sector supports a wide range of businesses including hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, and recreational services.

Rizhao Steel is a major industrial enterprise and one of China important steel producers. The steel plant is located at the Rizhao Port, facilitating the import of iron ore and export of steel products. The port itself is a busy cargo hub, handling coal, ore, steel, and grain.

Rizhao is also Shandong largest aquaculture base. The coastal waters are used for farming fish, shrimp, shellfish, and seaweed. Tea cultivation is another distinctive agricultural sector, with Rizhao green tea gaining national recognition. In 2025, the city GDP reached 230 billion yuan, reflecting balanced growth across tourism, industry, and agriculture.
