Dongying Travel Guide

The city where the Yellow River meets the sea, home to the Yellow River Delta wetlands and China second-largest oil field — Shengli Oilfield.

About

Dongying is a prefecture-level city in northern Shandong Province, situated where the Yellow River — China "Mother River" — empties into the Bohai Sea. It is one of the youngest cities in China, having developed rapidly after the discovery of the Shengli Oilfield in the 1960s.

The city identity is shaped by two extraordinary forces: oil and the river. Shengli Oilfield, China second-largest petroleum producer, has its headquarters in Dongying and made the city a pillar of China energy industry. Thousands of pumpjacks dot the landscape, a surreal sight against the vast wetlands.

At the same time, the Yellow River Delta is one of the most dynamic natural landscapes in China. The river deposits 1.2 billion tons of sediment annually, causing the delta to grow by about 2 kilometers per year. This ever-changing environment supports a rich ecosystem of wetlands, reed beds, and mudflats that host millions of migratory birds. The delta was designated as a national nature reserve in 1992 and has become an internationally important wetland.

History & Development

Dongying is a young city by Chinese standards. Before the 1960s, the area consisted of small fishing villages, salt farms, and reclaimed tidal flats. The discovery of the Shengli Oilfield in 1961 changed everything. The city was officially established in 1983 to administer the oilfield and surrounding areas.

The Yellow River has flowed through the Dongying region since 1855, when a major course change shifted the river mouth from the Yellow Sea to the Bohai Sea. Since then, the delta has grown rapidly through sediment deposition, creating new land that continues to expand.

The area is also the birthplace of Sun Tzu (Sun Wu), the ancient Chinese military strategist and author of "The Art of War", who was born in what is now Guangrao County around 544 BC. In recent decades, Dongying has transitioned from a single-industry oil city toward more sustainable development, with growing emphasis on wetland conservation and eco-tourism.

Economy & Industries

Dongying economy is dominated by the Shengli Oilfield, operated by Sinopec. The oilfield produces approximately 23 million tons of crude oil annually, accounting for a significant share of China domestic petroleum output. The entire local supply chain — from drilling equipment to refining to petrochemicals — revolves around the industry.

In recent years, Dongying has been diversifying its economy. The petrochemical sector has expanded into refining and chemical production. The city is also developing new energy industries, including wind power and solar manufacturing, leveraging the coastal location.

Eco-tourism based on the Yellow River Delta is a growing sector. The wetland attracts bird watchers, nature photographers, and eco-conscious travelers. Agriculture, particularly aquaculture and salt farming, also contributes to the local economy.
