Linfen city skyline and landmarks (临汾) - Travel China Guide

Linfen Travel Guide

The cradle of Chinese civilization where Yao founded his capital, home to the spectacular Hukou Waterfall — the most powerful waterfall on the Yellow River.

About

Linfen, located in the southwestern part of Shanxi Province along the middle reaches of the Yellow River, is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization.

According to legend, Emperor Yao, one of the legendary Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, established his capital here over 4,000 years ago. The Yaomiao Temple complex honors this ancient ruler.

Linfen is also home to the Hukou (Kettle Mouth) Waterfall, the most powerful waterfall on the Yellow River. The thundering cascade, with its iconic rainbow and billowing mist, is one of China's most spectacular natural wonders.

The Hongdong Great Pagoda Tree is a symbol of Chinese diaspora — millions of Chinese families trace their ancestry to the Ming Dynasty migrations that began here.

History & Development

Linfen has one of the longest continuous histories of any city in China. Emperor Yao (traditionally dated 2356-2255 BC) is said to have established his capital in the area.

The Dingcun archaeological site proves human habitation dating back 100,000-200,000 years. The area was part of the Jin Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn period.

During the Ming Dynasty, Linfen was the gathering point for one of the largest human migrations in Chinese history. Between 1370 and 1417, over a million people were relocated from here to repopulate areas devastated by war.

In modern times, Linfen became a major coal and industrial center. The city has been working to improve its environment and develop cultural tourism.

Economy & Industries

Linfen's economy has been dominated by coal mining and heavy industry. The region has large coal reserves.

In recent years, the city has been working to diversify, promoting tourism centered on Hukou Waterfall, cultural tourism around the Yao and Hongdong heritage, and new energy industries.

Agriculture in the Yellow River valley produces wheat, corn, cotton, and fruits including apples and dates.
