Luliang city skyline and landmarks (吕梁) - Travel China Guide

Luliang Travel Guide

A land of dramatic yellow earth plateaus, ancient cliffside temples, and a rich historical heritage of the Shanxi region.

About

Luliang, named after the Luliang Mountains that run through its territory, is a prefecture-level city in western Shanxi Province. It was an important strategic location during the mid-20th century.

The city is characterized by its dramatic loess plateau landscape, carved by the Yellow River and its tributaries. The Beiwudang Mountain is a sacred Taoist site with cliff-hanging temples.

Luliang is also home to the historic Qikou Ancient Town, a well-preserved Ming-Qing river port that showcases the architecture and commerce of the yellow earth region. The Yellow River Gallery offers some of the most dramatic canyon views along China's mother river.

History & Development

Luliang has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The area was part of the Jin Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn period.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Qikou became a major river port for shipping goods along the Yellow River. It was a crucial link in the trade route between Shanxi and Shaanxi.

In the 1930s-40s, Luliang was a key strategic area in the region. The region produced many notable figures and stories that have become part of modern Chinese culture.

Economy & Industries

Luliang has a diversified economy based on coal, chemicals, and agriculture. The city is rich in coal reserves and is a major energy producer.

In recent years, Luliang has invested in tourism infrastructure, leveraging its Taoist mountains, Yellow River scenery, and historical heritage.

Agriculture is significant, with millet, chestnuts, dates, and wine grapes as key products. Fenyang County is famous for its millet wine, while Jiaocheng produces high-quality dates.
