Shuozhou Travel Guide

Home to the awe-inspiring Hanging Temple at Xuankongsi and the ancient wooden pagoda of Yingxian — a treasure trove of ancient Chinese architecture.

About

Shuozhou, located in northern Shanxi Province near the Great Wall, is a city steeped in history as a frontier garrison and a crossroads of nomadic and agricultural civilizations.

The city is best known for the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate and one of the greatest surviving wooden structures in the world. Built entirely without nails, it has stood for nearly a millennium.

Shuozhou also boasts well-preserved Ming Dynasty city walls, the exquisite Liao Dynasty Chongfu Temple with its Jin Dynasty murals, and proximity to the legendary Yanmen Pass of the Great Wall.

History & Development

Shuozhou has been a strategic frontier town since the Warring States period. During the Northern Dynasties (386-581 AD), it served as a key military garrison against northern nomadic tribes.

The Liao Dynasty (907-1125) established the region as an important administrative center, building the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda in 1056 AD. The Ming Dynasty reinforced the city's fortifications and built the Shuozhou city wall.

In modern times, Shuozhou has become a center for coal mining and energy production, while preserving its remarkable architectural heritage.

Economy & Industries

Shuozhou's economy is heavily based on coal mining and energy production. The city sits on rich coal deposits and is a major supplier for northern China.

In recent years, the city has been diversifying into new energy, particularly wind and solar power, taking advantage of the region's open landscapes.

Agriculture plays a secondary role, with buckwheat, millet, and sheep farming being most important. Tourism is growing, driven by the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and Great Wall sites.
