Jincheng, located in the southeastern corner of Shanxi Province, is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It sits at the southern edge of the Taihang Mountains, where Shanxi meets Henan Province.
The city is famous for the Royal Prime Minister's Mansion, the magnificent estate of Chen Tingjing, a renowned Ming Dynasty scholar-official. The Wangmang Ridge offers some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in northern China.
Jincheng is also known for its rich coal reserves, which have fueled its economy for decades. The surrounding countryside features pristine nature reserves, ancient temples, and traditional villages.
The Jincheng area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. During the Spring and Autumn period, it was part of the Jin State.
The area flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties, when successful scholars and merchants built grand mansions and compounds. Chen Tingjing (1639-1712), a native of Jincheng, served as a Grand Secretary and chief editor of the Kangxi Dictionary.
In the 20th century, Jincheng became a major coal mining center. Today, the city balances its industrial heritage with cultural preservation and eco-tourism development.
Jincheng's economy has long been dominated by coal mining. The region has some of the richest anthracite coal deposits in China.
In recent years, the city has been diversifying into coal chemicals, new energy, and manufacturing. It is also developing its tourism sector, leveraging the Royal Prime Minister's Mansion and Wangmang Ridge.
Agriculture produces corn, wheat, and fruits. The region is particularly known for its sweet persimmons and walnuts.
