Changzhi Travel Guide

A city nestled in the Taihang Mountains, known as "the lungs of Shanxi" for its lush forests, with the legendary Hanging Temple of Taihang as its crown jewel.

About

Changzhi, known historically as Shangdang, is a prefecture-level city in the southeastern part of Shanxi Province. It is nestled in the Taihang Mountains, giving it a unique geographical identity.

Known as "the lungs of Shanxi," Changzhi has some of the highest forest coverage in the province. The Taihang Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in northern China, with sheer cliffs, waterfalls, and dense forests.

The city has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years and played an important role during the Warring States period as a strategic stronghold of the Zhao Kingdom. During the mid-20th century, the Shangdang Campaign (1945) was a key military engagement in the region.

History & Development

Changzhi has been strategically important since ancient times, controlling access between the North China Plain and the Shanxi plateau. During the Warring States period (475-221 BC), it was a heavily fortified area of the Zhao Kingdom.

The name "Shangdang" (上党) means "highlands" and appears in historical records dating back over 2,500 years. The region was a key battleground during the Qin unification wars.

In 1945, the Shangdang Campaign was a critical military engagement in the region, shaping the subsequent course of events.

Economy & Industries

Changzhi has a diversified economy. Coal mining and coal-related industries remain important, but the city has been actively transitioning toward greener sectors.

Agriculture thrives in the fertile valleys, producing corn, millet, walnuts, and apples. The region is also known for traditional Chinese medicine ingredients.

Tourism is a growing sector, driven by the Taihang Grand Canyon, Badaquan, and the Hanging Temple. The city is investing in eco-tourism and mountain resort development.
