Jinzhong Travel Guide

One of the best-preserved ancient walled cities in China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city walls, dating from 1370 AD, encircle an area of 2.25 square kilometers. Inside, Ming and Qing Dynasty streets, 3,800 traditional courtyards, and ancient merchant houses have been perfectly preserved. Pingyao was China's financial center in the 19th century.

A sacred mountain combining Taoist and Buddhist heritage, famous for its cliff-hanging temples and dramatic rock formations. The mountain is riddled with caves, ancient pavilions, and precipitous pathways clinging to vertical cliffs.

The magnificent residence of the Qiao family, one of Shanxi's wealthiest merchant clans during the Qing Dynasty. The complex includes 41 courtyards and 313 rooms, decorated with exquisite wood carvings, brick carvings, and painted beams. It was the setting for Zhang Yimou's film "Raise the Red Lantern."

An even larger merchant mansion complex than Qiao's, built over 300 years by the Wang family. It contains 5 fortresses, 123 courtyards, and over 1,000 rooms. The intricate stone carvings are considered among the finest in China.

The historic old town of Yuci District, featuring Ming and Qing Dynasty streets, temples, and traditional houses. Less touristy than Pingyao, it offers a more local experience of Shanxi's ancient architecture.

A scenic mountain area with unusual red rock formations, hiking trails, and panoramic views of the Jinzhong basin. The red cliffs contrast beautifully with the green forests.
