Gaoping city skyline and landmarks (高平) - Travel China Guide

Gaoping Travel Guide

The ancient battlefield of the Warring States' bloodiest battle, now a peaceful county known for its grilled tofu and ancient temple carvings.

About

Gaoping is a county-level city under the administration of Jincheng, located in southeastern Shanxi Province. Despite its small size, it holds an outsized place in Chinese history.

The city is famous as the site of the Battle of Changping (260 BC), the bloodiest battle of the Warring States period, where the Qin army defeated the Zhao kingdom. This battle paved the way for China's first unification under Qin Shi Huang.

Gaoping is also home to the Yangtou Mountain Grottoes, exquisite Buddhist cliff carvings from the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the Yan Emperor's Mausoleum, honoring one of China's mythical ancestors.

History & Development

The Gaoping area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The name "Gaoping" (high plains) reflects its location on the Loess Plateau.

The Battle of Changping in 260 BC was the defining event in Gaoping's history. The Qin army, led by general Bai Qi, besieged the Zhao army for 46 days, forcing surrender. Traditional accounts say over 400,000 Zhao soldiers were executed.

During the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534 AD), Buddhism flourished and the Yangtou Mountain grottoes were carved. The area remained an important cultural and religious center through the Tang and Song dynasties.

Economy & Industries

Gaoping's economy is based on agriculture, coal mining, and small-scale manufacturing. The area produces millet, corn, wheat, and fruits.

The city has some coal resources, though not as extensive as other parts of Shanxi. Manufacturing includes building materials and food processing.

Tourism is a growing sector, centered on the Changping Battlefield site and Yangtou Mountain grottoes. The grilled tofu industry is a small but distinctive local specialty.
