Dezhou city skyline and landmarks (德州) - Travel China Guide

Dezhou Travel Guide

The birthplace of China's most famous braised chicken, a historic canal city with a unique Philippine royal tomb.

About

Dezhou, located in northwestern Shandong Province at the junction of Shandong, Hebei, and Henan provinces, is a historic city whose name is synonymous with one of China's most beloved foods — Dezhou Braised Chicken. This culinary icon, with its golden skin and fall-off-the-bone tenderness, has made Dezhou famous across the nation.

But Dezhou offers much more than chicken. The city holds a truly unique historical treasure — the Tomb of the King of Sulu, where a 15th-century Philippine king was buried by imperial Ming decree. It is the only foreign royal tomb in China, and the king's descendants still live in Dezhou to this day.

Dezhou was also the home of Dong Zhongshu, the Han Dynasty scholar who established Confucianism as China's state philosophy. The city's cultural park dedicated to him reflects this profound intellectual heritage.

Situated along the ancient course of the Yellow River, Dezhou boasts scenic wetlands, vast forests, and a rich agricultural tradition producing prized jujubes, mulberries, and Yellow River carp. The city is a transportation hub where the Beijing-Shanghai Railway meets the Grand Canal.

Tomb of the King of Sulu

The Tomb of the King of Sulu is one of China's most extraordinary historical sites — the only royal tomb of a foreign monarch on Chinese soil. In 1417, King Paduka Pahala of Sulu (present-day Philippines) visited the Ming court and died of illness in Dezhou on his return journey. The Ming Emperor ordered a grand tomb built for him, and his descendants settled in Dezhou, with their descendants still living here today. The site includes the tomb mound, a memorial hall, and a mosque.
