Xinxiang's recorded history spans over 2,000 years. During the Warring States period, it was an important strategic location. The area prospered during the Han and Tang dynasties as part of the fertile Yellow River floodplain.
In modern times, Xinxiang's development accelerated with the arrival of the railway in the early 20th century. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway made the city a transportation hub, spurring industrial growth.
The truly remarkable chapter in Xinxiang's recent history is the construction of the Guoliang Tunnel Road. In 1972, Shen Mingxin, the party secretary of Guoliang Village, led 12 other villagers in a daring project to create a road through the mountain that isolated their village. Using only hammers, chisels, and gunpowder, they carved a 1,300-meter tunnel through solid rock. Five workers lost their lives in the process, but the road transformed the village's fortunes.
Today, Xinxiang has grown into a significant city with a GDP exceeding 350 billion yuan. Its economy has diversified beyond traditional agriculture into manufacturing, education, and tourism.
