Jiaozuo city skyline and landmarks (焦作) - Travel China Guide

Jiaozuo Travel Guide

Home to the spectacular Yuntai Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark and the birthplace of Chen-style Tai Chi.

About

Jiaozuo, located in northwestern Henan Province at the foot of the Taihang Mountains, is one of China's most remarkable stories of urban transformation. Once a grimy coal-mining city, it has reinvented itself as a premier tourism destination.

The crown jewel is Yuntai Mountain, a UNESCO Global Geopark of breathtaking beauty. The Red Stone Gorge, formed from 1.2-billion-year-old red quartzite, is one of China's most photographed natural wonders.

Jiaozuo is also the birthplace of Chen-style Tai Chi. In the small village of Chenjiagou, visitors can watch masters practice the slow, graceful movements and learn the philosophy behind this ancient martial art.

History & Development

Jiaozuo was historically a small county known for agriculture until the 20th century. The discovery of coal turned it into an industrial powerhouse, supplying much of central China's energy needs.

The 1990s brought a decline in coal mining, and Jiaozuo faced an economic crisis. In an extraordinary pivot, the city invested heavily in tourism infrastructure centered on Yuntai Mountain.

Chenjiagou Village's legacy dates to the 17th century, when Chen Wangting created Chen-style Tai Chi, blending martial arts with Taoist philosophy. The art form has since spread worldwide.

Economy & Industries

Tourism is now the main driver of Jiaozuo's economy, with Yuntai Mountain attracting millions of visitors annually. The city has built hotels, resorts, and entertainment facilities to support the tourism boom.

Traditional industries still exist. Jiaozuo produces machinery, chemicals, and building materials. The Wen County area is famous for iron-stick yams, a high-value agricultural product.

The Tai Chi cultural industry is growing, with Chenjiagou attracting international students who come to study martial arts and traditional Chinese culture.
