Wenchang Space Launch Center
One of China four satellite launch centers, opened in 2016. Located near the equator for greater fuel efficiency. Visitors can tour the exhibition center and watch live launches when scheduled.
China's space city on Hainan's northeast coast, home to the Wenchang Space Launch Center and the legendary Wenchang chicken.
Wenchang, located on the northeastern coast of Hainan Island, is a city of remarkable contrasts. It is simultaneously a traditional cultural center — home to the best-preserved Confucius temple in Hainan and the birthplace of the world-famous Wenchang chicken — and a cutting-edge space technology hub hosting one of China most important satellite launch centers. The city is surrounded by lush coconut plantations, earning it the nickname "Coconut Town." The Dongjiao Coconut Forest, with over a million coconut trees stretching along 20 kilometers of coastline, is the largest of its kind in China. Wenchang also boasts a proud maritime heritage as an important departure point for Chinese emigrants to Southeast Asia.
Wenchang has a history dating back over 2,100 years, first established as Zibei County during the Han dynasty. It was renamed Wenchang in 627 AD during the Tang dynasty, meaning "Prosperous Culture." The city has long been a center of Confucian learning, and its Confucius Temple, built in 1045, testifies to this scholarly tradition. In the modern era, Wenchang gained international attention with the construction of the Wenchang Space Launch Center, which became operational in 2016. The launch center was built on Hainan east coast to take advantage of its low latitude, which allows rockets to gain additional velocity from the Earth rotation.
Wenchang economy has three main pillars: aerospace industry, agriculture, and tourism. The Wenchang Space Launch Center has attracted related industries and research institutions, creating a growing aerospace industrial cluster. The city is positioning itself as China gateway to commercial space exploration. Agriculture centers on coconut cultivation — Wenchang produces a significant portion of China coconut supply. Other agricultural products include rubber, tropical fruits, and of course, the famous Wenchang chicken. Tourism is growing rapidly, driven by space-themed tourism, beach resorts, and culinary tourism centered on Wenchang chicken. The city GDP was approximately 300 billion yuan in 2024.
