Qionghai, located on the eastern coast of Hainan Island, is best known as the permanent host city of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), a prestigious annual international conference that draws global attention to this otherwise tranquil coastal city. The city sits at the confluence of three rivers — the Wanquan, Longgun, and Jiagu — which together meet the South China Sea, creating a landscape of exceptional natural beauty. Beyond the forum, Qionghai is a city of deep cultural heritage. It has one of Hainan largest communities of returned overseas Chinese, whose influence is visible in the architecture, cuisine, and cosmopolitan atmosphere of the region. The city also embodies Hainan rural charm, with fertile farmland, coconut groves, and traditional fishing villages.
Qionghai was established as a county during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) and has a history spanning over 1,300 years. The area has long been an important agricultural region and a departure point for Hainanese emigrating to Southeast Asia. Many overseas Chinese families maintained strong ties with their ancestral hometown, investing in education and infrastructure. The modern history of Qionghai is defined by the creation of the Boao Forum for Asia, first held in 2001. The forum was modeled after the World Economic Forum in Davos and was established to promote economic integration and cooperation among Asian countries. Its presence transformed Qionghai from a quiet agricultural county into an internationally recognized conference destination.
Qionghai economy is driven by conference tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The Boao Forum for Asia has spawned a thriving conference and exhibition industry, with numerous hotels, convention facilities, and supporting services. The city also benefits from its designation as an international medical tourism pilot zone, the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, which offers cutting-edge medical services. Agriculture remains significant, with Qionghai producing rice, tropical fruits, vegetables, and aquatic products. Fishing is a traditional livelihood, with Tanmen Fishing Port being one of Hainan most important. The city GDP was approximately 350 billion yuan in 2024, with the service sector representing an increasing share.
