The Tonghua region has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of ancient Korean kingdoms and later Manchu settlement. During the Qing Dynasty, the area was part of the Manchu homeland and was restricted to Han settlement.
The modern city developed with the arrival of the railway in the 1930s during the Japanese occupation. Ginseng trading and wine production emerged as key industries, taking advantage of the region's favorable climate and terrain.
After 1949, Tonghua grew as an industrial city with pharmaceutical, wine, and food processing industries. The discovery of iron ore deposits led to the development of mining and metallurgy.
In the reform era, Tonghua has focused on developing its unique product strengths — high-quality ginseng and wine — while managing the transition from state-owned enterprises to a more market-oriented economy. The city has also developed tourism centered on its mountain scenery and border location.
