Tonghua Travel Guide

A mountain city in southern Jilin near the North Korean border, Tonghua is famed for ginseng, wine, and its scenic location in the Changbai Mountain range.

About

Tonghua is a prefecture-level city in southern Jilin Province, nestled in the foothills of the Changbai Mountain range near the border with North Korea. The city's mountainous terrain, clean waterways, and cool climate create ideal conditions for two of its most famous products: ginseng and wine.

Known as the "Ginseng Capital of China," Tonghua has been a center of ginseng cultivation for centuries. The surrounding mountains provide the perfect environment for growing this prized medicinal herb, and the city's ginseng is considered among the best in the country.

Tonghua is also one of China's premier wine-producing regions. The city's winemaking tradition dates back to 1937, and today it is particularly famous for ice wine, made from grapes that freeze naturally on the vine during Tonghua's cold winters.

The city's location near the North Korean border adds a unique cultural dimension. The significant ethnic Korean minority population has influenced local cuisine, festivals, and architecture, giving Tonghua a distinctive character that sets it apart from other Jilin cities.

History & Development

The Tonghua region has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological evidence of ancient Korean kingdoms and later Manchu settlement. During the Qing Dynasty, the area was part of the Manchu homeland and was restricted to Han settlement.

The modern city developed with the arrival of the railway in the 1930s during the Japanese occupation. Ginseng trading and wine production emerged as key industries, taking advantage of the region's favorable climate and terrain.

After 1949, Tonghua grew as an industrial city with pharmaceutical, wine, and food processing industries. The discovery of iron ore deposits led to the development of mining and metallurgy.

In the reform era, Tonghua has focused on developing its unique product strengths — high-quality ginseng and wine — while managing the transition from state-owned enterprises to a more market-oriented economy. The city has also developed tourism centered on its mountain scenery and border location.

Economy & Industries

Tonghua's economy is driven by several distinctive industries. Ginseng cultivation and processing are the city's most famous economic activities, with Tonghua-produced ginseng commanding premium prices domestically and internationally. The city is home to major ginseng processing companies producing extracts, powders, and health supplements.

The wine industry is another pillar, with Tonghua being one of China's oldest and most respected wine-producing regions. The local wineries produce red wines, ice wines, and fruit wines that are distributed nationally.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing is a growing sector, building on the ginseng and herbal medicine tradition. Iron ore mining and metallurgy also contribute to the local economy.

Agriculture includes corn, rice, and soybean production in the valleys, while the mountains provide valuable forest products including wild mushrooms, medicinal herbs, and timber.
