The UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, a district in Foshan globally renowned as the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine and a culinary paradise.
Shunde is a district of Foshan city in Guangdong Province, renowned worldwide as a culinary capital. Designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2014, Shunde is widely regarded as the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, the most celebrated regional cuisine in Chinese gastronomy.
Despite its relatively small area of 806 square kilometers, Shunde has achieved remarkable economic success. With a population of 3.2 million and a GDP exceeding 430 billion yuan, it has one of the highest GDP per capita figures in China, rivaling many first-tier cities.
Shunde's culinary reputation draws food lovers from across China and around the world. The district is home to countless restaurants, from humble street stalls to Michelin-starred establishments, all dedicated to the pursuit of culinary perfection. Beyond food, Shunde boasts beautiful Lingnan gardens, historic water villages, and a thriving modern economy.
Shunde's history traces back over 1,500 years. During the Ming Dynasty, it developed into a prosperous agricultural and commercial center, known for its sericulture, fish farming, and fruit production. The area was officially established as Shunde County in 1452.
The culinary traditions of Shunde began to take shape over centuries, shaped by the region's abundant natural resources from the Pearl River Delta. Local chefs developed techniques that emphasized the natural flavors of fresh ingredients — steaming, poaching, and stir-frying at high heat. This philosophy became the foundation of Cantonese cuisine.
In the modern era, Shunde underwent rapid industrialization. The rise of Midea Group, founded in 1968 in Beijiao town, transformed Shunde into a global home appliance manufacturing center. In 2002, Shunde was reorganized from a county-level city into a district of Foshan, integrating more closely with the Greater Bay Area's economic development.
The UNESCO designation in 2014 marked international recognition of Shunde's culinary heritage. Today, Shunde balances its industrial might with cultural preservation and gastronomic tourism, attracting millions of visitors annually.
Shunde's economy is one of the most dynamic in China, powered by two pillars: home appliance manufacturing and the culinary industry.
Midea Group, headquartered in Shunde's Beijiao town, is a Fortune Global 500 company and one of the world's largest home appliance manufacturers. The company produces air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and countless other products exported to over 200 countries. Midea's presence has fostered a complete supply chain ecosystem in Shunde, including numerous supporting enterprises in electronics, plastics, and metal processing.
The culinary sector is both a cultural treasure and an economic driver. Shunde's restaurants, food processing companies, and culinary tourism generate substantial revenue and employment. The district hosts numerous food festivals and culinary competitions that attract international attention.
High-end furniture manufacturing is another significant industry, with Shunde producing premium furniture for domestic and export markets. Chencun Flower World, Asia's largest flower market, contributes to the agricultural and trading sectors.
