Opium War Museum (Humen)
Located at the original Humen Fort, this museum documents the Opium War (1840-1842) with artifacts, dioramas, and the historic cannon batteries.
A manufacturing powerhouse where global tech brands OPPO and vivo are born, Dongguan blends industrial energy with lush parklands and historical sites.
Dongguan occupies a singular position in China manufacturing landscape. Located between Guangzhou and Shenzhen along the Pearl River Estuary, this prefecture-level city of 10.5 million people is one of the world most important production bases for electronics, toys, apparel, and machinery. It is the home of OPPO, vivo, and BBK Electronics, which together form one of the largest smartphone manufacturing ecosystems on the planet.
But Dongguan is not just factories. The city has transformed itself into a livable green metropolis with over 1,200 parks, forest reserves, and the vast Songshan Lake science park. Its history is marked by the Opium War, which began at Humen in 1839 when Commissioner Lin Zexu destroyed confiscated opium stocks. Today, Humen is both a historic site and a modern economic powerhouse, with one of China busiest ports and the iconic suspension bridge connecting the two sides of the Pearl River.
Dongguan has a history spanning over 1,700 years as an administrative entity, but its global significance was shaped in the 19th century. In 1839, Lin Zexu oversaw the destruction of over 20,000 chests of opium at Humen, an act that precipitated the First Opium War (1840-1842) between China and Britain. The war ended with the Treaty of Nanking, which ceded Hong Kong to Britain and opened five treaty ports. The Humen Fort and Opium War Museum preserve this pivotal history.
Dongguan remained a farming and fishing area until the Reform and Opening Up in 1978, when its position between Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong turned it into a magnet for foreign investment and manufacturing. In the 1980s and 1990s, thousands of factories opened, producing everything from toys to textiles to electronics. By the 2010s, Dongguan had evolved from low-cost assembly to advanced manufacturing, becoming the global headquarters for major smartphone brands and a leader in automation and robotics.
Dongguan economy is defined by electronics and advanced manufacturing. The city is best known as the home of BBK Electronics, the parent company of OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus. These brands together ship over 200 million smartphones annually, making Dongguan the world undisputed smartphone capital. The city also hosts major production bases for many other global electronics brands in components, displays, and batteries.
Toys manufacturing is another Dongguan specialty. The city produces approximately 75 percent of the world toys, with over 4,000 toy factories employing hundreds of thousands of workers. Major global toy brands have their production lines here. The apparel industry is equally substantial, with Dongguan supplying fast fashion brands worldwide through a dense network of textile mills, garment factories, and logistics centers.
Cross-border e-commerce has emerged as a major growth area, leveraging Dongguan manufacturing base and port infrastructure. The city GDP reached ¥1.18 trillion in 2024. Dongguan is also investing in the Songshan Lake Science City, a high-tech hub focusing on semiconductors, AI, and biotechnology, positioning itself for the next generation of industrial competition.
