Yunfu Travel Guide

The stone carving capital of China, a city in western Guangdong known for its marble and granite industry, and the scenic Panlong Cave and Guoshan Temple.

About

Yunfu is a prefecture-level city in western Guangdong Province, known as the "Stone Carving Capital of China." Located in the mountainous region of western Guangdong, the city covers 7,779 square kilometers with a population of approximately 2.4 million.

The city's name literally means "cloud float," inspired by the misty mountains that surround the area. Yunfu has developed a unique identity centered on its world-renowned stone materials industry, which processes marble, granite, and other stone products for domestic and international markets.

Beyond its industrial reputation, Yunfu holds significant cultural importance as the birthplace of Master Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. The Guoshan Temple and Liuzu Hometown sites attract pilgrims and history enthusiasts from around the world, adding a spiritual dimension to the city's character.

History & Development

Yunfu has a history spanning over 2,000 years. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), the area was already known for its stone carving craftsmanship, a tradition that has been passed down through generations.

The most significant historical figure associated with Yunfu is Master Huineng (638-713 CE), the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, who was born in what is now Xinxiang County. His teachings, recorded in the Platform Sutra, fundamentally shaped the development of Zen Buddhism in China and beyond.

In modern times, Yunfu's stone materials industry began to flourish in the 1980s during China's reform and opening-up period. The city established itself as a major stone processing center, attracting investment and expertise from around the world. In 1994, Yunfu was upgraded from a county-level city to a prefecture-level city, accelerating its urban development.

Economy & Industries

Yunfu's economy is dominated by the stone materials industry, which has earned the city its reputation as China's Stone Carving Capital. The city is one of the country's largest stone processing and trading centers, producing marble, granite, and sandstone products for construction, decoration, and art.

The Yunfu International Stone City is a major trading hub, hosting hundreds of stone enterprises and an annual stone expo that attracts international buyers. The industry employs a significant portion of the local workforce and drives related sectors such as logistics and machinery.

Stainless steel manufacturing is another important industry in Yunfu. The city produces a wide range of stainless steel products, including tableware, kitchenware, and industrial components, exported to markets worldwide.

Agriculture also plays a role, with Yunfu producing sugarcane, rice, fruits, and tea in its fertile valleys. The processing of agricultural products, including preserved fruits from Xinxiang, adds value to the local farming sector.
