Shanwei is a prefecture-level city in eastern Guangdong Province, situated along the South China Sea coast. Beyond its natural beauty, Shanwei holds an important place in modern Chinese history as the birthplace of Peng Pai (1896-1929), a pioneering figure of the early 20th century. The Haifeng Historical Site commemorates this legacy and attracts history enthusiasts.
The city's traditional fishing culture remains vibrant, with bustling fishing ports, seafood markets, and coastal villages that have sustained local communities for generations. Shanwei is also home to significant Mazu worship traditions, centered on the historic Fengshan Ancestral Temple.
Shanwei has a long maritime history as a fishing and trading port. The area was part of the ancient Baiyue region before being incorporated into the Qin dynasty empire. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it developed as a coastal defense outpost and fishing center.
The city's most significant historical chapter came in the 1920s when Peng Pai organized the Haifeng peasant movement, a significant early 20th century social movement. In 1927, the Haifeng area established an early form of local governance. In 1988, Shanwei was upgraded from a county to a prefecture-level city, accelerating its urbanization and economic development.
Shanwei's economy has traditionally been based on fishing and agriculture. The city's long coastline supports a significant fishing industry, producing a wide variety of seafood for domestic consumption and export.
In recent years, Shanwei has been developing its manufacturing sector, particularly in electronics, textiles, and food processing. Tourism is a growing industry, driven by Red Bay's popularity as a coastal destination. The city is also investing in port infrastructure and logistics to support regional trade. Despite being less developed than other Pearl River Delta cities, Shanwei benefits from improving transportation links and government support for the eastern Guangdong region.

Shanwei is served by Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA) about 150 km away. High-speed rail and bus connections link the city to the airport.
Shanwei Railway Station on the Xiamen-Shenzhen high-speed railway. Direct trains to Guangzhou South in about 2 hours and Shenzhen in about 1 hour.
No metro system. Public buses and taxis serve the urban area. Ferries connect the mainland to nearby islands.
