Shizuishan Travel Guide

A historic industrial city in northern Ningxia, Shizuishan is home to the spectacular Shahu (Sand Lake), a unique desert-wetland ecosystem where sand dunes meet crystal-clear waters.

About

Shizuishan is a prefecture-level city in northern Ningxia, situated on the western bank of the Yellow River at the eastern foot of the Helan Mountains. It is the northernmost city in Ningxia and a historic gateway between China proper and the Inner Mongolian grasslands.

The city's most famous attraction is Sand Lake (Shahu), a spectacular national 5A scenic area where the Tengger Desert meets a vast freshwater lake. This unique desert-wetland ecosystem supports diverse wildlife and offers stunning landscapes that change with the seasons.

Shizuishan has a rich industrial history as one of China's earliest coal-mining centers. In recent decades, the city has undergone a remarkable transformation, shifting from heavy industry to tourism, renewable energy, and eco-friendly development. The Helan Mountains to the west are home to ancient rock art and provide a dramatic backdrop to the city.

History & Development

The Shizuishan area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years, as evidenced by the Helan Mountain rock art. During the Han and Tang dynasties, the region was a frontier territory and important corridor along the Silk Road.

The modern city was born from coal mining. In the 1950s, large coal deposits were discovered, and Shizuishan was established as a mining town. It became a prefecture-level city in 1975. For decades, it was known as "Ningxia's Coal Capital."

Since the 2000s, the city has diversified its economy, investing heavily in environmental restoration and tourism development.

Economy & Industries

Shizuishan's economy has transformed from coal mining to a diversified model. Coal remains important but has been modernized. New industries include photovoltaic manufacturing, new materials, and renewable energy. Sand Lake tourism has become a major economic driver, attracting millions of visitors annually. The Yellow River irrigation supports high-quality agriculture, including Ningxia's famous goji berries and wine grapes.
