Langfang city skyline and landmarks (廊坊) - Travel China Guide

Langfang Travel Guide

A rapidly developing city between Beijing and Tianjin, known as the "Beijing-Tianjin Corridor", famous for Xianghe meat pie and the grand First City Under Heaven theme park.

About

Langfang, situated midway between Beijing and Tianjin, is a city that has transformed from a quiet agricultural area into a dynamic economic hub. Its strategic location in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei corridor has fueled remarkable growth over the past two decades.

The city is known for the magnificent First City Under Heaven, a 1.3-kilometer-long reproduction of an ancient Ming-Qing dynasty capital. This grand theme park attracts visitors with its impressive city walls, imperial architecture, and cultural performances.

Shengfang Ancient Town offers a glimpse into China's rich heritage with its 2,500-year history, ancient stone bridges, and traditional waterways. Meanwhile, the Dachang Hui Autonomous County showcases the region's diverse Islamic culture.

Food lovers flock here for the famous Xianghe meat pie — a giant stuffed flatbread that is a true culinary icon of the region.

History & Development

Langfang's history dates back over 2,000 years. During the Spring and Autumn period, it was part of the Yan Kingdom. The area gained strategic importance during the Sui and Tang dynasties as a transport corridor between the northern capitals.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Langfang served as an important post station on the imperial road between Beijing and the south. The name "Langfang" (廊坊) originated from a village established during this period.

The modern city emerged after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, initially as a small market town in Anci County. In 1989, Langfang was upgraded to a prefecture-level city. The real transformation began in the 2000s when the city positioned itself as a service hub for Beijing and Tianjin.

The establishment of the Langfang Economic and Technological Development Zone in 1992 attracted significant investment, and the city has since developed into a major manufacturing and logistics center.

Economy & Industries

Langfang's economy has grown rapidly thanks to its unique location between Beijing and Tianjin. The Langfang Economic and Technological Development Zone hosts over 1,000 enterprises in electronics, machinery, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.

The city is a major manufacturing base for automotive parts, with many suppliers serving the Beijing-Tianjin automotive industry. The convention and exhibition industry is also significant, with the Langfang International Convention Center hosting trade fairs year-round.

Agriculture remains important in outlying counties. Xianghe is famous for its meat pie industry, Dachang for premium beef production, and Gu'an for high-quality apples. The service sector, particularly logistics and warehousing, has expanded rapidly as Beijing's non-capital functions are relocated to the region.
