Baoding Travel Guide

An ancient military stronghold and former provincial capital, known for the Viceroy's Office, Baiyangdian Lake, and its legendary donkey meat sandwich.

About

Baoding, meaning "protecting the capital," has been a strategic military city for over 2,000 years. Located just 150 kilometers south of Beijing, it served as a gateway to the capital and was the site of the Viceroy of Zhili's office during the Qing Dynasty.

The city's most famous attraction is the Viceroy's Office, the best-preserved provincial governor complex in China. Visitors can explore the grand halls and courtyards where Qing officials governed three provinces.

Baiyangdian Lake, known as the "Pearl of North China," offers a surprising contrast to the arid North China Plain. With over 3,700 islands and channels, visitors can boat through lotus flowers and reed marshes.

Food lovers must try the legendary Baoding donkey meat sandwich. The locals say "Heaven has dragon meat, Earth has donkey meat" — a testament to its deliciousness.

History & Development

Baoding's history dates back to the Warring States period when it was part of the Yan Kingdom. During the Yuan Dynasty, it became an important military garrison protecting the capital Dadu (Beijing).

The city reached its peak importance during the Qing Dynasty when the Viceroy of Zhili made Baoding his headquarters. The Viceroy governed the three provinces surrounding the capital, making Baoding the de facto second capital.

In the 20th century, Baoding was famous for its military academy, which trained many of China's most famous generals. The academy was known as the "Cradle of Modern Chinese Military."

Economy & Industries

Baoding's economy combines traditional industries with modern development. Manufacturing includes automotive parts, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. The city is home to Great Wall Motor's headquarters.

Agriculture remains important, with the Baiyangdian region producing fish, lotus roots, and the famous salted duck eggs. Tourism is growing, centered on historical sites and Baiyangdian Lake.

The city is also developing a high-tech sector, with several industrial parks attracting investment in new energy and electronics.
