The French-built Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, completed in 1910, transformed the region. Bisezhai became a bustling international transit point connecting Kunming to the port of Haiphong in Vietnam. The railway brought Western influences and economic development.
Gejiu's tin mining industry dates back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. During the 20th century, Gejiu became one of the world's largest tin producers, earning its reputation as the "Tin Capital". The industry drove significant urbanization and economic growth.
In 2013, the Yuanyang Rice Terraces were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing the Hani people's remarkable agricultural system.
