Honghe Travel Guide

Home to the UNESCO-listed Yuanyang Rice Terraces—a breathtaking landscape of ancient Hani terraced fields carved into the mountains over 1,300 years.

About

Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture is one of Yunnan's most culturally and geographically diverse regions. Its name comes from the Honghe (Red River) that flows through the region, carrying red silt from the mountains.

The prefecture's claim to fame is the Yuanyang Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site that represents one of humanity's most remarkable agricultural achievements. For over 1,300 years, the Hani people have sculpted these mountainsides into an intricate system of terraced paddies, creating a landscape of breathtaking beauty that changes with the seasons and light.

Jianshui Ancient Town is a treasure trove of Ming and Qing architecture. The Chaoyang Tower and the second-largest Confucius Temple in China make it one of Yunnan's most culturally significant historical towns.

Honghe's history is written in railways and minerals. The French-built Yunnan-Vietnam Railway left architectural gems like Bisezhai station, while Gejiu remains the "Tin Capital" with 2,000 years of mining heritage.

The region is the birthplace of Yunnan's most famous culinary export—Crossing Bridge Noodles (guoqiao mixian). Jianshui grilled tofu, steam pot chicken, and the unique cao ya vegetable are among the local food treasures.

History & Development

The Hani people have inhabited the Ailao Mountain region for over 1,300 years, developing the extraordinary Yuanyang Rice Terraces through generations of labor. Their oral traditions tell of migrations from the Tibetan Plateau and the development of sophisticated terrace irrigation systems.

Jianshui has been a cultural and administrative center since the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). The Jianshui Confucius Temple was built in 1285 during the Yuan Dynasty. The town flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a center of learning and commerce.

The French-built Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, completed in 1910, transformed the region. Bisezhai became a bustling international transit point connecting Kunming to the port of Haiphong in Vietnam. The railway brought Western influences and economic development.

Gejiu's tin mining industry dates back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty. During the 20th century, Gejiu became one of the world's largest tin producers, earning its reputation as the "Tin Capital". The industry drove significant urbanization and economic growth.

In 2013, the Yuanyang Rice Terraces were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing the Hani people's remarkable agricultural system.

Economy & Industries

Tourism is the most dynamic economic sector in Honghe, driven primarily by the Yuanyang Rice Terraces and Jianshui Ancient Town. The UNESCO World Heritage designation has significantly increased international and domestic tourist arrivals.

Mining remains economically important. Gejiu's tin reserves have supported centuries of extraction, and the city remains a significant global tin producer. Other minerals mined include manganese, lead, and zinc in smaller quantities.

Agriculture is diverse due to the varied microclimates. Tobacco is a major cash crop, along with sugarcane, tropical fruits (bananas, pineapples, mangoes), and tea. The terraced rice cultivation of the Hani people is both a cultural practice and a source of livelihood.

Honghe has developed a growing food processing industry, capitalizing on the fame of Crossing Bridge Noodles and other Yunnan specialties. The prefecture also produces Yunnan's famous Pu'er tea in some areas.
