Hengshui Travel Guide

Home of the largest freshwater lake in North China, famous for Wuqiang New Year paintings and Hengshui Laobaigan liquor.

About

Hengshui, meaning "horizontal river," is a prefecture-level city in southern Hebei Province named after the vast Hengshui Lake. It is known as the "Hometown of Chinese Woodblock New Year Pictures," home to the nationally renowned Wuqiang New Year paintings, and the birthplace of Hengshui Laobaigan, one of China's most famous liquor brands with a brewing history spanning over two millennia.

The crown jewel of the city is Hengshui Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the North China Plain. This national nature reserve spans 75 square kilometers and hosts over 300 species of migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The lake's reed marshes and lotus fields offer a rare natural oasis in the otherwise dry North China Plain.

Culturally, Hengshui occupies a special place in Chinese history. The Jizhou region — now part of Hengshui — was considered the first of the legendary Nine Provinces established by Yu the Great. The city has produced many notable figures including Dong Zhongshu, the great Han Dynasty Confucian philosopher who shaped Chinese imperial ideology for centuries.

History & Development

Hengshui's history can be traced back over 2,000 years. During the Xia Dynasty, the Jizhou region was recognized as the first of the Nine Provinces — the earliest administrative divisions of ancient China. The area flourished during the Han Dynasty, when Jizhou became a major political and military center.

The Western Han Dynasty philosopher Dong Zhongshu (179–104 BC), a native of present-day Jing County in Hengshui, developed the doctrine of "Heavenly Mandate" and Confucian state ideology that became the official philosophy of imperial China for over two millennia.

The famous Hengshui Laobaigan liquor has been produced here since the Han Dynasty, with its brewing techniques perfected over generations. The name "Laobaigan" was reputedly bestowed by Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty.

In modern times, Hengshui was established as a prefecture in 1962 and elevated to a prefecture-level city in 1996. It is now known nationwide for its rigorous education system centered on Hengshui High School.

Economy & Industries

Hengshui's economy is transitioning from traditional agriculture toward diversified industries. In 2024, the city's GDP reached 197.18 billion yuan, with the service sector accounting for 53.6% of the total. Key industries include liquor production, chemicals, metal products, and rubber and plastics manufacturing.

Agriculture remains a pillar of the local economy. Hengshui is a major grain producer in Hebei, growing wheat and corn across over one million mu of farmland. The city is also famous for Shenzhou honey peaches, a premium fruit with imperial tribute heritage.

The liquor industry, centered on the historic Hengshui Laobaigan brand, is one of the city's signature economic sectors. Other notable industries include wire mesh production in Anping County, which supplies 80% of China's wire mesh products to global markets.
