Hengshui's history can be traced back over 2,000 years. During the Xia Dynasty, the Jizhou region was recognized as the first of the Nine Provinces — the earliest administrative divisions of ancient China. The area flourished during the Han Dynasty, when Jizhou became a major political and military center.
The Western Han Dynasty philosopher Dong Zhongshu (179–104 BC), a native of present-day Jing County in Hengshui, developed the doctrine of "Heavenly Mandate" and Confucian state ideology that became the official philosophy of imperial China for over two millennia.
The famous Hengshui Laobaigan liquor has been produced here since the Han Dynasty, with its brewing techniques perfected over generations. The name "Laobaigan" was reputedly bestowed by Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty.
In modern times, Hengshui was established as a prefecture in 1962 and elevated to a prefecture-level city in 1996. It is now known nationwide for its rigorous education system centered on Hengshui High School.
