Cangzhou city skyline and landmarks (沧州) - Travel China Guide

Cangzhou Travel Guide

An ancient martial arts capital and home to China's oldest surviving iron sculpture, known for acrobatics, hot pot chicken, and golden jujubes.

About

Cangzhou, situated about 120 kilometers south of Tianjin on the Bohai Bay coast, is a city of deep cultural heritage and surprising contrasts. Its name means "the land of the sea," reflecting its long history as a coastal settlement.

The city is famous worldwide for two things: martial arts and acrobatics. Cangzhou has been known as the "Martial Arts Capital of China" for centuries, producing legendary martial arts masters like Huo Yuanjia. Meanwhile, Wuqiao County is the undisputed birthplace of Chinese acrobatics.

Cangzhou is also home to China's oldest surviving iron sculpture — the mighty Cangzhou Iron Lion, cast in 953 AD. This 40-ton beast has weathered over a thousand years of storms, earthquakes, and wars, standing as the eternal guardian of the city.

Food lovers will find plenty to celebrate. Cangzhou hot pot chicken is a fiery, bubbling feast, and Hejian donkey burgers are legendary across northern China. The region's golden jujubes and Botou pears are prized throughout the country.

History & Development

Cangzhou's history spans over 2,000 years. During the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), it belonged to the Yan and Qi kingdoms. Its strategic coastal location made it an important military garrison and trading port.

The city gained prominence during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) as a key defense post along the Bohai coast. The Iron Lion was cast in 953 AD to protect against floods and calm the sea.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Cangzhou became a major center for martial arts. The region's harsh environment — frequent floods, droughts, and bandits — forced locals to develop self-defense skills, turning Cangzhou into a martial arts powerhouse.

In modern times, Cangzhou has transformed into an industrial and logistics hub, leveraging its port on the Bohai Bay and its position on the Beijing-Shanghai railway.

Economy & Industries

Cangzhou's economy is a diverse mix of industry, agriculture, and logistics. The city's Bohai New District is a major chemical and petrochemical hub, with large refineries and industrial parks.

The Port of Huanghua, part of Cangzhou, is one of the most important coal-exporting ports in China. The port also handles chemicals, ores, and container cargo, making Cangzhou a key node in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regional logistics network.

Agriculture remains significant, with Cangzhou known for its golden thread jujubes, Botou pears, and other specialty fruits. The Nandagang Wetland supports fisheries and aquaculture.

The city's manufacturing sector includes automobile parts, pipe fittings, and construction materials. Cangzhou is also developing a tourism industry centered on its cultural heritage and wetland ecology.
