Wuxi

Taihu Lake pearl and powerhouse of integrated circuits, IoT chips, and photovoltaic solar manufacturing in southern Jiangsu.

About

Wuxi, a vibrant city on the northern shore of Taihu Lake in southern Jiangsu, has transformed itself from a historic silk-and-textile center into one of China's most dynamic high-tech manufacturing hubs. The city is the global headquarters of China's Internet of Things (IoT) industry cluster and a major player in integrated circuit fabrication, home to SK Hynix's semiconductor plant.

Beyond its industrial might, Wuxi boasts some of the finest classical gardens and lakescapes in the Yangtze River Delta. The Grand Canal flows through the city center, flanked by Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture. Taihu Lake, China's third-largest freshwater lake, provides a stunning natural backdrop with its 72 islands and mist-covered mountains.

Wuxi's cultural heritage runs deep—it was the birthplace of ancient Wu culture and produced notable figures like the painter Xu Beihong and musician Hua Yanjun (Blind Ah Bing). Today, the city balances rapid technological advancement with careful preservation of its water-town heritage.

History & Development

Wuxi's recorded history traces back over 3,000 years to the founding of the Wu Kingdom during the Shang Dynasty. The city's name, meaning "no tin," reflects the depletion of local tin mines—a story that gave rise to the Chinese idiom "no tin in Wuxi" meaning things are not what they seem.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wuxi emerged as a major grain transport hub on the Grand Canal. The city's strategic position between the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake made it a center for rice trading, silk production, and textile manufacturing. Wealthy local merchants built elaborate classical gardens along the canal banks, many of which survive today.

The late 19th century saw Wuxi become one of China's earliest industrial cities, with modern cotton mills, flour mills, and silk filatures. This industrial tradition positioned Wuxi well for the reform era after 1978, when the city rapidly developed township enterprises that evolved into today's technology corporations.

Since the 2000s, Wuxi has made a strategic pivot toward high-tech industries, establishing itself as China's IoT capital and a major semiconductor hub. The Wuxi National High-Tech District now hosts hundreds of R&D centers and manufacturing plants.

Economy & Industries

Wuxi's economy, with a GDP of approximately 1.5 trillion yuan, is among the most advanced in Jiangsu Province. The city has successfully executed a transition from traditional textile manufacturing to high-value semiconductor and IoT industries.

The integrated circuit industry is Wuxi's crown jewel. SK Hynix operates one of China's largest semiconductor packaging and testing facilities here. The Wuxi National Integrated Circuit Industry Park houses over 200 IC design, manufacturing, and packaging companies, forming a complete supply chain. The IoT industry cluster, headquartered in the Wuxi SensingNet Industrial Park, has attracted over 3,000 enterprises working on smart sensors, cloud computing, and connected devices.

Wuxi is also a national leader in photovoltaic solar manufacturing. Companies headquartered here produce solar cells, modules, and inverters for global markets. The traditional textile and apparel sector continues to operate but has shifted toward technical fabrics and smart textiles.

The Taihu Lake tourism economy contributes significantly, with scenic spots like Lingshan Grand Buddha and Turtle Head Isle drawing over 100 million domestic visitors annually. The service sector, including finance, logistics, and software development, now accounts for over half of the city's GDP.
