Suzhou (also called Suzhou, Anhui to distinguish it from the more famous Suzhou in Jiangsu) is a prefecture-level city in the northern part of Anhui Province. Located on the fertile Huai River plain, the city has been an agricultural heartland for centuries. The area's most remarkable attraction is Huangcangyu, a national forest park named after a legend that Emperor Liu Bang of the Han Dynasty once hid here. The park features dense forests, unusual rock formations, and most importantly — ancient Han dynasty cliff carvings that are over 2,000 years old. Dangshan County, under Suzhou's administration, is nationally famous for its crispy pears — large, juicy, and sweet, they are considered among the best pears in China. The county's pear orchards stretch as far as the eye can see, creating a stunning white blossom landscape every spring. Suzhou also has a rich culinary tradition rooted in the Huai River cuisine, known for its freshwater fish, wild vegetables, and hearty grain dishes.

History & Development

The Suzhou area has been settled for over 2,000 years. During the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), it was part of the strategic region guarding the approaches to the Central Plains. Huangcangyu's Han Dynasty cliff carvings provide evidence of the area's historical importance. Legend says that Liu Bang, the founding emperor of the Han Dynasty, took refuge in the forested hills here before establishing his dynasty. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Suzhou developed as a commercial centre on the trade route between northern and southern China. The fertile plains supported a prosperous agricultural economy. In modern times, Suzhou has grown into a significant regional centre for agricultural production, food processing, and light manufacturing.

Suzhou's economy is predominantly agricultural. The city is a major producer of wheat, corn, cotton, and fruits. Dangshan pears are a nationally recognised brand, exported across China and internationally. Food processing is the leading industrial sector, with companies processing fruits, grains, and meat products. Light manufacturing, textiles, and building materials are also significant. Logistics is growing due to Suzhou's location at the intersection of Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces. The city serves as a regional distribution hub for agricultural products.
