Jiangyin Travel Guide

A wealthy county-level city on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, Jiangyin is one of China's most dynamic private economic hubs with a rich cultural heritage spanning 7,000 years.

About

Jiangyin is a thriving county-level city under Wuxi, located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in southern Jiangsu Province. With a population of 1.78 million, it is one of China's most economically dynamic county-level cities, consistently ranking among the top in the country for comprehensive economic strength.

The city has a history spanning over 7,000 years. During the Ming dynasty, it was home to Xu Xiake, China's greatest travel writer and geographer, whose diaries documented his 30-year exploration of China's landscapes. The city also played a significant role in the history of Chinese education — the Qing dynasty Jiangsu Provincial Education Commissioner's Office was located here.

Modern Jiangyin is a powerhouse of private enterprise. The city is home to numerous publicly listed companies and is particularly strong in textiles, steel, chemicals, and machinery manufacturing. Jiangyin Port is one of the busiest inland river ports in China, handling millions of tons of cargo annually.

The Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge, completed in 1999, was the first bridge across the Yangtze designed and built entirely by Chinese engineers — a source of immense local pride. The bridge has become a symbol of the city's engineering capabilities and economic ambition.
