Yuyao Travel Guide

Site of the 7,000-year-old Hemudu Neolithic culture and a modern manufacturing powerhouse, Yuyao bridges China's ancient past with its industrial present.

About

Yuyao is a thriving county-level city under Ningbo in eastern Zhejiang Province, with a population of 1.25 million. It occupies a unique place in Chinese history as the site of the Hemudu Site, a 7,000-year-old Neolithic settlement that rewrote the history of early Chinese civilization.

Discovered in 1973, the Hemudu Site revealed the earliest cultivated rice in the world, pushing back the timeline of rice agriculture by over 1,000 years. The site also yielded sophisticated wooden structures with mortise-and-tenon joints, carved ivory artifacts, and lacquered objects — demonstrating that the Hemudu people had achieved a remarkably advanced level of civilization.

Yuyao is also the birthplace of Wang Yangming (1472-1529), one of China's greatest philosophers whose teachings on innate knowledge and the unity of knowledge and action shaped East Asian thought for centuries. His former residence is a major cultural site.

Modern Yuyao is an economic powerhouse. The Yuyao Plastics City is China's largest plastic raw materials trading market, and the city has a strong manufacturing base in plastics, electronics, automotive parts, and small home appliances. The city's economic success has earned it a spot among China's top 100 county-level economies.
