Ruian Travel Guide

A manufacturing powerhouse on the Feiyun River, Ruian is known worldwide for its auto parts industry and the historic Yuhai Tower library.

About

Ruian is a prosperous county-level city under Wenzhou in southeastern Zhejiang Province, with a population of 1.52 million. It is widely recognized as "China's Auto Parts Capital" — the city's automotive components industry supplies major global car manufacturers and has made Ruian one of China's wealthiest county-level cities.

The auto parts industry in Ruian began in the 1970s and has since grown into a comprehensive industrial cluster covering everything from engine parts to electrical systems. Thousands of factories produce components that find their way into vehicles made by Volkswagen, Toyota, Ford, and other global brands. This manufacturing success is rooted in the entrepreneurial Wenzhou spirit for which the region is famous.

But Ruian is also a city of deep culture. The Yuhai Tower, built in 1888, is one of China's finest surviving private libraries, containing over 50,000 rare books and manuscripts. The library's elegant architecture and exquisite garden reflect the scholarly traditions that have flourished in this region for centuries.

The Feiyun River runs through the heart of Ruian, creating a fertile valley that has sustained agriculture for millennia. The river's estuary, where fresh water meets the East China Sea, supports a rich ecosystem and productive fisheries, supplying Ruian's markets with fresh seafood that defines local cuisine.
