Cixi Travel Guide

Known as "China's Home Appliance Capital," Cixi is a manufacturing powerhouse in the Yangtze River Delta and home to the historic Shanglin Lake Yue Kiln.

About

Cixi is a dynamic county-level city under Ningbo in northern Zhejiang Province, with a population of 1.83 million. It is known as "China's Home Appliance Capital" — the city produces approximately 60% of China's small household appliances, including electric fans, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, and coffee makers.

The scale of Cixi's manufacturing sector is staggering. Thousands of factories and workshops are spread across the city, forming one of the most concentrated small appliance industrial clusters in the world. The city's economy has grown from humble agricultural beginnings to become one of the wealthiest county-level cities in China.

But Cixi's history runs much deeper than modern industry. During the Tang and Song dynasties, the kilns around Shanglin Lake produced the finest celadon in China — the famous Yue ware. The "secret color" celadon (mise ci) made here was so prized that it was reserved exclusively for the imperial court. The shard-littered shores of Shanglin Lake still bear witness to this glorious ceramic tradition.

The 36-kilometer Hangzhou Bay Bridge, connecting Cixi to northern Zhejiang, has transformed the city's accessibility and accelerated its economic integration with Shanghai and the broader Yangtze River Delta region. The bridge is itself a tourist attraction and a symbol of modern Chinese engineering.
