Why Guangdong
When people think of Guangdong, the first thing that comes to mind is "food in Guangzhou." But Guangdong is so much more than cuisine.
Guangzhou's arcade streets, Shenzhen's modern skyline, Zhuhai's island resorts, Foshan's martial arts heritage, Kaiping's watchtower villages — Guangdong is an underrated tourism powerhouse.
The entire province is interconnected, making the 240-hour visa-free transit perfect for a Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Zhuhai loop. This guide focuses on the three core cities, with side trips to Foshan and Kaiping.

8-Day Itinerary
D1: Arrive Guangzhou — Beijing Road — Dafo Temple
After arriving in Guangzhou, check into your hotel. In the evening, explore Beijing Road Pedestrian Street — Guangzhou's oldest commercial street. Beneath the road surface, you can see the millennium-old ancient road site: five layers of stone pavement from the Qin-Han dynasties through the Republic era, stacked on top of each other. Absolutely fascinating. The nearby Dafo Temple is illuminated at night, its golden facade resembling the bathhouse from Spirited Away — a perfect photo spot. When you're tired, head to Huifu East Road food street for Yinji rice rolls and Apo beef offal at century-old stalls.
D2: Chen Clan Hall — Shamian Island — Sacred Heart Cathedral
Morning at Chen Clan Hall — this Qing Dynasty ancestral temple complex is the masterpiece of Lingnan architecture. The rooftop pottery, brick carvings, and wood carvings are exquisite, and at just ¥10 it's incredible value. Afternoon at Shamian Island, once a British-French concession with over 50 preserved European-style buildings, tree-lined streets perfect for walking and photography. Evening at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Yide Road — one of only four all-stone Gothic cathedrals in the world, its twin spires piercing the sky. The silhouette at sunset is breathtaking.
D3: Canton Tower — Pearl River Night Cruise
Afternoon at Huacheng Square, Guangzhou's "city living room," surrounded by the Provincial Museum, Library, and Grand Theatre. At dusk, ascend Canton Tower (the "Slim Waist") — buy a combo ticket including the Ferris wheel. Inside the 488-meter transparent glass ball, you'll俯瞰 the entire city. Sunset is the most dramatic moment. After descending, walk to Tianzi Dock for a Pearl River night cruise, passing Haixinsha, Liehe Bridge, and Bai'e Tan along the illuminated waterfront — about 1 hour.
D4: Guangzhou → Foshan — Ancestral Temple — Lingnan Tiandi
Take the Guangfo Metro to Foshan (30 minutes). Visit the Ancestral Temple, built in the Northern Song Dynasty, featuring the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and Ip Man Hall with martial arts performances. The temple's pottery ridges and brick carvings are stunning examples of Lingnan craftsmanship. Afterward, walk to Lingnan Tiandi — a creative district converted from old townhouses, retaining the blue-brick exteriors while housing cafés, restaurants, and designer shops inside. A beautiful blend of old and new. Evening in Shunde for authentic Cantonese cuisine: fish sashimi, Lunjiao cake, and double-skin milk.
D5: Foshan → Kaiping — Diaolou Watchtowers — Return
Early morning departure from Foshan to Kaiping (about 2 hours). The Kaiping diaolou are a unique type of Chinese rural architecture, combining defense, residence, and a blend of Chinese and Western design. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Zili Village is the most iconic cluster — filming location of "Let the Bullets Fly." These watchtowers stand among rice paddies and lotus ponds, their East-meets-West architecture utterly distinctive. Li Garden is the private estate of overseas Chinese merchant Xie Weili, blending Lingnan gardens with Western buildings. Return to Guangzhou in the afternoon; evening at Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street to see the arcade building complex.
D6: Guangzhou → Shenzhen — Window of the World — Shenzhen Bay
Morning high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North (about 30 minutes). Afternoon at Window of the World, where 130+ global landmarks are recreated in miniature — Eiffel Tower, pyramids, Taj Mahal. Small but surprisingly detailed. Evening at Shenzhen Bay Park, cycling or walking along the waterfront boardwalk with views of the Hong Kong skyline and Shenzhen Bay Bridge. Sunset here is gorgeous. Night at Coastal City or MixC for Shenzhen's modern urban vibe.
D7: Shenzhen → Zhuhai — Chimelong Ocean Kingdom
Morning ferry from Shenzhen Shekou Port to Zhuhai Jiuzhou Port (about 1 hour), or via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Head straight to Hengqin's Chimelong Ocean Kingdom — one of the world's largest marine theme parks. Must-sees: the whale shark tank (world's largest acrylic glass wall), dolphin shows, and beluga whale theater. The evening ocean parade and fireworks water-screen show are the grand finale — absolutely spectacular. Consider a two-day ticket; one day isn't enough.
D8: Zhuhai — Lovers' Road — Opera House — Depart
Morning: rent a bicycle and ride along Lovers' Road — 28 kilometers of Zhuhai's most beautiful coastal boulevard. Pass the Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue (the city's icon), the Sea Bathing Beach, the Love Post Office, with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge visible in the distance. Lunch at the seafood market. Afternoon at Zhuhai Opera House, this shell-shaped building on the sea is Zhuhai's new landmark — incredibly photogenic. Depart from Zhuhai or Jinwan Airport.
