History & Development

Kaohsiung was originally a small fishing village called Takao during the Dutch colonial period (1624-1662). It grew during the Qing dynasty as a port for agricultural exports. The city's modern development began under Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945), when the Japanese built Kaohsiung Harbor as a major port and established the city's industrial foundation. After World War II, Kaohsiung continued to develop as an industrial center. The Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone, established in 1966, was the first such zone in the region and a model for economic development. In the 21st century, Kaohsiung shifted focus toward culture and tourism, hosting the 2009 World Games and developing the harbor-front into leisure and cultural spaces.

Economy & Industries

Kaohsiung is the industrial heart of the region, with its port being one of the busiest in the world. The economy is dominated by heavy industries including shipbuilding (CSBC Corporation), steel (China Steel Corporation), and petrochemicals. The Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone and nearby industrial parks host numerous electronics and manufacturing companies. In recent years, the city has diversified into creative industries, logistics, and tourism. The Port of Kaohsiung handles over 10 million TEUs annually. Tourism has grown significantly, with over 8 million visitors per year drawn to the city's attractions, shopping, and culinary scene.
